This story has me seeing red! DeShawn Sims is my son David’s older brother by his father. I read the quote Petey (that’s his nickname his father gave him) saying that he is the last man standing in his family. That is a bald faced LIE! Petey has had a lot of challenges growing up and he’s made something out nothing but he is not the last man standing in the family.
David is still here and whether Petey wants to acknowledge him or not he is not going anywhere. I gave birth to David when I was 18 he was Shawn’s fifth child. I knew Shawn had three children but there was one he denied for whatever reason. Shawn was in jail when I had his son and we were not together. I was young scared and on welfare but when I saw this little baby I vowed that I would lay down my life for him. Lolita was pissed when she found out I was having Shawn’s baby but it was cool because I didn’t know her so I didn’t care. We all lived in the same hood so I saw her from time to time. One day when David was a year old I saw her walking with her four children. I went out of my way to talk to her and tell her we should squash whatever anger we had towards one another for the sake of the kids growing up together. Our sons Petey, Marcus, David and Marshall grew up calling one another brother.
Marcus was closer to David because he said David looked just like their dad. See Shawn was out of jail for eight years before he went back ten years ago. He was not a stand up guy at all. He met his wife had a baby with her and forgot he had other children. He would throw them a few dollars now and then but never consistently. He spent more time chasing her and money then he did taking care of his kids.
Me? I did what I always do sit back and watch. I know how life is I’m living it and learning everyday. I watched as the very woman he couldn’t live without turned on his ass and he’s been sitting ten long years. She’s living em up with a new husband more paid than the last. Yet Shawn may have been a grimy dope slanging dead beat father but he’s never denied David. Never.
I hope all of Petey’s wishes and dreams come true. He’s worked hard for it. He’s shown more strength of character than his father ever has. All I ask is that he do what his father did and that is not deny his brother David DeShawn Sims. But I guess this is one I’m going to have to just sit back and watch.
